Required Software

VS Code

You will need to install an IDE such as VS Code to work with the code.

.NET SDK

You will also need to install the .NET Software Development Kit and any additional extensions to support development in the C# language. Follow the documentation on the linked page to get started.

It is recommended that you also install the Git version control system to manage your code. Git is the industry standard version control solution, and allows you to download code repositories with a simple git clone command.

GitHub does offer a desktop application. However, the preferred method of working with Git is to use the command line interface (CLI) in your terminal.

We do not link to a repository in this chapter, but will in future chapters.

One Step at a Time

If you are not already comfortable with Git and prefer to focus on the concepts in this book, use the alternative method of downloading the example code in zip file format. This is perfectly okay! When learning new concepts it is more effective to focus on learning one concept at a time.

You can always learn Git later!

Additional Resources

You do not have to know C# to follow the concepts in this book. However, if you would like to learn more about developing in the C# language, we recommend that you:

  • Skim the C# Documentation to brush up on unfamiliar concepts. You may progress by following the table of contents on the left of the page.
  • Browse the Beginner C# Modules on Microsoft Learn to find modules that interest you.

We will provide recommendations for supplementary resources throughout the book. Unless otherwised noted these are not necessary to understand the concepts in this book. They are optional readings.
